Parent Champions

What is it?

Parent Champions is a parent to parent outreach programme.  Parent Champions are parent volunteers who spend a few hours a week linking with other local parents to share information about childcare, local services and the benefits to their child of taking up their free early education place.  Our Early Education Practitioners, who are based in Children's Centres, assist in providing specialised training to our Parent Champions to help us reach other parents.

The Parent Champions programme has grown since January 2019. The programme started in three areas in Newham - Stratford, East Ham and Plaistow - and has been supported by the three Early Education Practitioners in these areas.  We have now cascaded the programme to all areas in Newham, which means there's an Early Education Practitioner for each neighbourhood in Newham.  It will enable us to reach more parents with the help of our Parent Champions.

How can parent champions help you?

If you're confused about your options for childcare and other services, our Parent Champions can guide you through what's available.  They will share their own experiences and the struggles with childcare as a parent.  They can give you advice and let you know what has helped make parenting easier for them.  We're very lucky to have Parent Champions from different ethnic groups. So far, we have recruited Parent Champions from a wide range of ethnic communities.

We have Parent Champions who speak the following languages:

  • English
  • Bengali
  • French
  • Gujerati
  • Hindi
  • Somali
  • Urdu

Click on the neighbourhood areas below to see the languages spoken by Parent Champions in each area.

If you want to know more about what childcare entitlements are on offer and would like to speak to someone that speaks a community language, please get in touch with an Early Education Practitioner at your local Children's Centre.

How to contact a Parent Champion

You can contact parent champions via your local Children's Centre.  The parent champions are attached to an Early Education Practitioner who are based at Children's Centres.  There is an Early Education Practitioner for each neighbourhood in Newham.  Ask to speak to the Early Education Practitioner at your nearest Children's Centre.

Becoming a Parent Champion volunteer

We are always on the lookout for volunteers! Anyone with experience of being a parent can be a Parent Champion.  If you like the idea of volunteering for a few hours each week to reach out to local parents to share your experiences of childcare and providing information and guidance, then becoming a Parent Champion may be for you.

If you would like to be a Parent Champion volunteer, please get in touch with an Early Education Practitioner at your local Children's Centre to complete the form - which you can view to the right of this page.

What do I need to become a Parent Champion?

  • Be a Newham resident
  • Complete a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) with us. This is a criminal records check (it is free to Newham volunteers)
  • Commit to volunteering a few hours a week
  • Commit to attending training sessions and meetings
  • Be enthusiastic and passionate about engaging with other parents to share information on childcare and local services and improving their children's outcomes
