Detached

Newham’s Detached Youth Work Team are based primarily in Stratford providing youth work support to young people in their environment, and on their terms. We typically work on the street, in parks, pitches, shops, malls and cafes etc. The nature of our work means we engage with and support some of Newham’s most vulnerable young people who are not accessing any other LBN services.

Detached youth workers create safe social environments in which young people can explore in alternative ways of thinking and acting.

Detached youth workers engage young people in a range of discussions around issues of personal safety, risky behaviours and attitudes and are often exposed to disclosures regarding young people’s offending behaviours.

We will support young people to access and undertake a process of Social and Emotional learning through engaging with our youth work practice, youth work offer (experiences and opportunities) and youth work settings.

This process of Social and Emotional learning will focus on the learning and development of domains of skills - Responsibility, Empathy, Problem Solving, Initiative , Teamwork and Emotion Management, underpinned entirely by the foundational domain of safety (physical, social, emotional etc) that transfer into other areas of young people’s lives  including - Education, Employment, Health, Family and Community.

It is our intention that throughout undertaking this process as well as beyond, young people will:

  • Feel Valued
  • Have Influence
  • Feel Safe
  • Realise their Potential

The Detached youth work team currently deliver sessions in Stratford and Green Street. Sessions are delivered Monday to Saturday, which include after school, early evenings and late evenings in both areas.

We are also leading and coordinating the Newham Detached Network where we are trying to bring together our VCSO partners who deliver detached youth work in Newham such REIN, AAA and XLP.
