The statutory school age for children in England is from the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. Children will normally attend Reception class from the beginning of the school year in which they become 5 years of age.

They transfer to secondary school at the end of the school year in which they become 11 and statutory school age ends in the July of the year in which they become 16.

In order to secure a place for their child, parents need to make applications for primary and secondary schools. It is the responsibility of the local authority to ensure there are sufficient places for all children.

If parents do not:

  • Express their preference for a place
  • Notify the authority that their child will be educated in an independent school (with the details of the school)
  • Notify the authority that they intend to educate their child at home

a place in a school with vacancies will be allocated (after children who have applied have been allocated) and legal action will be taken to enforce attendance.
