50 Steps to a Healthier Borough Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2020-2023
Newham’s Public Health Team recently launched The 50 Steps to a Healthier Newham strategy which was developed in conjunction with a number of partners, and aims to tackle the health inequalities that exist within the borough.

The 50 Steps is a call to action to partners, the council and the wider community to work together to make Newham a healthier and happier place.

There are 12 priorities set out in the strategy and priority 8 focuses on how we can increase physical activity levels in the borough.

Priority 8: Supporting an active borough
Priority 8 of the 50 Steps is all about supporting an active borough, ensuring that there is access for everyone in Newham to benefit from physical activity that suits their ability and interests. Below are the four steps we will specifically focus on.

Step 33: Develop and promote a universal offer of sport and physical activity for residents in Newham
Step 34: Develop an inclusive programme for the least active adults to participate in sport and physical activity
Step 35: Increase participation of children and young people in physical activity and sport
Step 36: Support place shaping for physical activity, including leisure infrastructure and the wider environment

ActiveNewham

We are a Leisure Trust with charitable status working in partnership with Newham Council to deliver leisure, sports and volunteering opportunities in Newham. Since January 2013 our mission has been to support you to become more active in your local community. Whether it's to take part in your favourite sport, organise an event in your local neighbourhood park, or even just to achieve your fitness goals in one of our 4 leisure and fitness centres. We are here to help and support you. We run Atherton Leisure Centre, East Ham Leisure Centre, Newham Leisure Centre and Manor Park Fitness Centre where members can enjoy a Gym, Swim or Groupe Exercise session in their local area. Alongside this, we run our Youth Programmes which give Newham residents the chance to participate in free fitness and activity sessions and our Volunteer Programme where residents can get involved in a range of events from local community sessions to larger events like the London Marathon.
